Description
The aim is to investigate the content and quality of the briefs (or building programs) in Sweden to get a state-of-the art picture of the current practice of documenting the project statements created in the early stages of designing healthcare spaces. The project will focus on the initial brief, when the aim is to express the user’s need and requirements. In healthcare the significant end-user is the patient. The present study will be based on an ongoing project in which we are developing a valid and reliable audit instrument to examine the content and quality of information in briefs. The instrument includes issues, based on criteria for health care spaces. The questions are formulated to evaluate whether pertinent information is documented in the briefs such as whether there is an overall description of the users’ organisation, a clear problem statement, a clear aim, and measurable outcomes for the project, and the use of evidence-based information. An assessment of the quality of the briefing process and the briefs has become more important as a means of enhancing continuous improvement and evidence-based design practice. Conducting an audit of briefs can be seen as part of the ongoing development of the briefing process. An audit could also act as a basis for future evaluation of design outcomes and could enable systematic comparisons.
