Description
The purpose of this study is to improve care performance, and identify how the clinical decision-making processes concerning nutrition in older people in municipality care can be supported by computerized decision-support system (CDSS). This will be achieved by:
• identification of the clinical decision-making processes concerning nutrition and eating,
• development and implementation of a CDSS to prevent malnutrition,
• evaluation of the effects on nursing performance and learning in the organisation when using the CDSS.

“Think aloud” interviews based on patient scenarios, and record audits will be used to identify decisions concerning eating and nutrition in the care of old people. The sample consists of all care staff in elderly care units in two municipalities. Based on these findings a CDSS will be developed in collaboration between the research team and the care staff, grounded in research based knowledge and clinical guidelines for prevention of malnutrition, and subsequently implemented. In the evaluation phase the implementation of the CDSS will be evaluated by a quasi-experimental design using Think aloud method based on patient scenarios and interviews with nurses, record audits, and observations of the use of the CDSS.
