Teaching sustainability using flipped classroom and active learning seminars

In this presentation, we will discuss a method for integrating sustainability in courses and education programmes. The method was developed at KTH, and refined at Snowflake Education into a framework that is now available for educators and universities across the world.

The framework utilises a flipped classroom approach, with active learning seminars based on educational board games. It offers a time-efficient and cost-effective way to introduce key competences for sustainability such as systems thinking and values thinking in a way that is easily adjusted to fit any education programme.

Key aspects of sustainability such as eg. climate change, sustainable production/consumption, and the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Agenda 2030 are included and addressed. Today, the method is currently used in a range of universities, eg. KTH (Sweden), Cambridge University (UK), Aalto University (Finland) and Uppsala University (Sweden).

Presenter: Jon-Erik Dahlin, PhD in fusion plasma physics; Lecturer at KTH and CEO/founder at Snowflake Education
