Installation Lecture

Denna nyhet är äldre än 6 månader och är kanske inte aktuell längre.

On 16 April, Professor André Augusto presented his Installation Lecture entitled Embracing Failure: Reflections on the Role of Creativity and Methodology in Research.

Isaac Asimov’s novel Profession influenced him from an early age, making clear to him that thinking, creativity and curiosity all serve as driving forces to both unlock and transmit knowledge.

While reflecting on his journey within photovoltaic (PV) solar energy education and research, André gave us a crash course in how solar cells are fabricated showing how earlier parts of that process formed his PhD research, while later parts have formed his post-PhD work.

His academic path has, in many ways, mirrored the ups and downs of the PV solar industry, sometimes facing existential threats which has required innovation and adaptation. However, as André has discovered and was eager to share with us, it is through frustration, setbacks and struggles that we can learn, develop new techniques, etc.

One development within his career thus far is a change of focus towards system-wide sustainability which is a more interdisciplinary, complex but fun research field which has lead to the creation of our Sustainable Energy Research Centre (SERC).

The Centre brings together not only our own researchers within the fields of energy systems and technologies, built environment, large scale energy systems but also the wider regional, national and international society.
