Learning Outcomes

The overall goal with the thesis is to give students the opportunity to apply and deepen previously acquired knowledge and skills by conducting a scientifically based study that give the student deeper knowledge and skills in the thesis subject.

After completing the course, students should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • demonstrate knowledge regarding research strategy, data collection and analytical methods and relevant research in the field of Informatics
  • Skills and ability
  • identify, formulate and argue concerning a problem within the subject of Informatics
  • plan and conduct literature reviews related to the problem formulated
  • plan and conduct a scientifically based study, ie, choosing strategy, data collection and analysis method, based on a problem
  • Present their findings in an oral presentation and in a written report
  • use different perspectives to see the problem from different perspectives, , argue for the chosen method, and apply an ethical relation manner towards those affected by a scientific work
  • Demonstrate the ability to complete tasks within a given timeframe

Judgement and approach

  • analyze and discuss the results of studies related to a problem
  • evaluate and give constructive criticism in a thesis work
  • critically review and evaluate their own academic work and provide examples of the methodological options that might possibly have been improved the work

Course Content

In this course, students should demonstrate that they can independently identify a research problem within the field and are able to plan and carry out a study in a scientific manner.

In supervision sessions and seminars, students are given the opportunity to discuss different ways to limit and describe their research problem, choose theoretical foundations, methods, and different data collection techniques. During the course, students will be trained to think in models, to make conscious and explicit simplifications, to collect and analyze relevant information.

The final thesis should take the form of a report written in accordance with scientific principles. The thesis will be orally presented and defended at an opposition. Furthermore, students have to be the opponent of on another thesis.
