Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student shall be able to:
- demonstrate good knowledge of the history of Islam in Africa
- demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the relationship between different Islamic orientations, and their relation to surrounding societies in Africa
- demonstrate comprehensive understanding of relevant theories on the roles of Islam in history and society in Africa
- demonstrate the ability to independently and critically interpret and analyse processes, mechanisms and strategies within different orientations of Islam in Africa
- communicate relevant theories and knowledge within this field.
Course Content
The course includes the study of the historical development of Islam in Africa. Contemporary relationships between different forms of Islam in Africa and their influences on different African societies are also studied. An important issue is the relationship between global and local perspectives in the study of Islam in Africa.
Assessment
The course is examined through oral and written presentations in connection with seminars; through three papers on the history of Islam in Africa; and through an independently written and critically analytical study based on literature chosen in consultation with the teacher.
Forms of Study
Lectures and seminars. The course is taught in English.
Grades
The Swedish grades A–F.
Prerequisites
- Bachelor Degree of 180 credits in the field of Humanities, Social Sciences or Education and English 6. No knowledge of Swedish is required.
