Learning Outcomes

The overall goal of the course is for the participant to develop knowledge, skills and approaches to work professionally as a teacher in higher education within his/her subject matter and to participate in the development of higher education.

After completion of the course, the course participant will be able to:

  • discuss and distinguish between different perspectives of knowledge and learning
  • discuss their professional experience of teaching forms and methods, and incorporate theoretical reasoning into their own teaching
  • demonstrate familiarity with physical and digital learning environments, and reflect on how different environments affect teaching and learning
  • plan, implement and assess teaching in a course in their own subject area
  • discuss the adaptation of teaching and learning environments from the perspectives of inclusion and accessibility
  • explain and critically review regulations and support for students with disabilities
  • explain at a general level the content of legal text and local regulations that relate to university education and discuss how these can be applied in teaching
  • discuss the opportunities for student involvement in the design of a specific component of the course

Course Content

The main content of the course is learning and teaching in higher education. This content is linked to questions regarding goals, values and policies in higher education. The content is designed to provide possibilities for the participant to link it to his/her own teaching and teaching environment (physical and digital) – the subject, the academy, and the university – where the goals and vision of Dalarna University constitute an active element in the course.

Assessment

Participation in all course meetings is obligatory. Absence from one course meeting can be compensated by participating in the corresponding course meeting the next time the course is offered. In special cases an extra assignment can be assigned, but this should be considered an exception.

Assessment takes place through active participation in the course meetings and by completing and presenting the assignments in the course.

Forms of Study

An important point of departure for the organisation of the course is that theory and practice are integrated which means that the participants should both study the course literature and practically try different teaching methods and activities. Forms of teaching are course literature study, lectures, seminars, individual and group assignments. The aim of the design is to stimulate a collegial dialogue where the course literature, the colleagues’ experience and the participant’s own experience contribute to the achievement of the learning objectives.
