Learning outcomes for the course

On completion of the course students will be able to:
  • describe and explain basic language structures and phenomena of the English language (such as word class and clause elements) by making use of relevant grammatical terminology, and to compare these structures with those of other languages
  • apply their knowledge and understanding of English language structure and its stylistic and regional variations so that they can communicate in idiomatic written English
  • independently solve language problems with the help of dictionaries, grammar books or electronic sources
  • identify grammatical and stylistic mistakes in the texts that they produce themselves, correct these mistakes and understand why a certain linguistic choice is preferred in a particular situation
  • identify the most common problems for learners of English and describe and explain to the learner what the problem is and how the problem is best dealt with to facilitate language learning.
  • demonstrate an understanding of basic speech production
  • read and transcribe words and sentences using phonetic script
  • demonstrate language proficiency by applying basic English grammar and writing rules.
