About Open Courses Catalogue
Dalarna University has developed an Open Courses Catalogue as a first step towards making the education it offers more accessible to a wider student base. This is in line with the University Vision, the UNESCO description of Open Educational Resources (OER) and UN Sustainable Development Goal 4.
The Dalarna University Vision
Regardless of an individual’s background and circumstances, we at Dalarna University want to make education available to everybody. As stated in our Vision, Dalarna University aims to “create open pathways to knowledge for a good society” and to make “teaching and research ever more accessible”. To meet these objectives, we have established a series of open courses – a specific category of OER – that we list in our Open Courses Catalogue.
What are OER – Open Educational Resources?
According to UNESCO, they
… are teaching, learning and research materials in any medium – digital or otherwise – that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, adaptation and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions.
Dalarna University has chosen to focus on open courses as a first step towards offering OER. This focus aims to meet the need for quality education for all as outlined by the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4: https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal4.
Dalarna University Open Courses Catalogue
To access our open courses, you first need to visit our catalogue: http://open.du.se. This is updated continuously as we add more courses. Everybody is welcome to take our courses – that is to say, you do not need to be a Dalarna University student. You simply need to have an interest in learning. We offer a wide range of open courses, from language courses to courses in the field of healthcare. Some are taught in English, some in Swedish. The course description will tell you what applies.
Will I receive university credit?
You will not receive university credit upon successful completion of an open course at Dalarna University. What you will receive is a form of simple confirmation recognising your participation. For example, Dalarna University awards a certificate to students in the course Midwifery Care in Bangladesh (see below) after they complete the course and pass an online test.
Example of a Successful Dalarna University Open Course
Midwifery Care in Bangladesh
In 2018, Dalarna University received funding from the United Nations Population Fund to develop a project to train midwifery teachers in Bangladesh. The project was extremely successful, with over 3000 students participating in the online course. Dalarna University aims to build on this success by expanding on the open courses it currently offers.
