Description
The aim of the project is to examine the music salon in Falun as a part of the mining community but also as a part of a historical context of the salon culture. A specific goal is to develop a deeper meaning about the salon when it comes to education and
pedagogic ideas. The project is based on Johan Henrik Munktells (1804-1861) education travels. Inspired by Mendelssohns musicsalon in Berlin and the early salons in Uppsala he created his own salon. The source material is built on a letter collection from J.H.
Munktell to his father J.J. Munktell in 1828-30. The letters can be considered as an unique historical material which places the salonsof Falun in a continental context of culture, education and industrial pretensions. The method is based on Paul Ricoeurs
hermeneutics. The narrative moments is qualified through three interpretation levels and attend to give the historical material a newdescription. The project is supported by international and Nordic research where Petra Wilhelmy and Anne Scott Sørensen takes a
central part. Salon research by Ingrid Holmqvist, Elisabeth Mansén means a great deal and when it comes to the musical salon inSweden Eva Öhrströms research takes a front place. The project has potential to extend the knowledge of Nordic salon culture. The
music salon in Falun is connected to the history of the copper mine but also to the pedagogical history of music and music education.
