Dalarna University celebrates its Academic Ceremony every second year. On March 24, 2023, it is once again time for us to confer doctoral degrees and honorary doctorates, and to inaugurate our new professors. We also wish to honour the appointment of docents, adjunct professors, visiting professors, and distinguished and recognised university teachers.
The 2023 Academic Ceremony will be celebrated in Borlänge. The ceremony will be conducted in Swedish.
If you are receiving a degree or an honour
It is important that you read the information that applies to the honour or degree that you will be awarded. You will also be sent information to your university email address, such as a newsletter from hogtid@du.se. This will keep you up-to-date on ceremony planning and important deadlines.
To be inaugurated as a professor, you must have been offered and accepted employment between January 1, 2020 and October 31, 2022 and not been previously inaugurated at Dalarna University. Only permanent employees and adjunct professors are inaugurated.

- February 24: Register yourself and any guests for the ceremony and banquet. (Registration opens in November)
- February 24: Submit title and short text (i.e. abstract) for the inaugural lecture programme. (Maximum of 500 characters including blank spaces).
- March 9: Submit for feedback on your presentation to hogtid@du.se (optional)
- March 22: Send final presentation for the inaugural lecture by 12:00 a.m. to hogtid@du.se.
- March 23: Give your inaugural lecture at Campus Falun between 9.00 and 12.00 noon.
- March 23: Attend a general rehearsal of ceremony proceedings at 17.00 at Galaxen, Borlänge.
- March 24: Attend lunch with the Governor of Dalarna County at 12.00 at the Governor’s residence in Falun.
- March 24: Attend the ceremony and banquet at Galaxen in Borlänge. Professors must arrive no later than 15.30; the ceremony begins at 17.00; and the banquet is at 19.00.
Inaugural Lectures - Presentation of Your Research
Newly inaugurated professors will give their inaugural lecture that is open to the public to attend. Inaugural lectures take place the day before the ceremony on Thursday, March 23 in the University Library, Campus Falun. Lectures are each to take 15 minutes + five minutes for questions from the audience.
Your research in 15 minutes
Of course, you don't have time to tell everything. You need to pick out the best and most interesting pieces to tell about.
In this lecture, you should address the "public". Who is it? Students, your families, colleagues, officials at the municipality, employees in health and social care. Age, education, prior knowledge look different!
You don't have to have a presentation, (optional) but if you're using Power Point, for example, we'd like you to think about a few important things.
The audience
If you think of the public as a high school student, you end up pretty right. Think about what interests and what references this person may have.
Suggestion for an overall approach for your presentation.
Four important things that should/could be included in your presentation: message, problem, solution, benefit.
1. Message
Start by deciding – what is the most important thing I want to convey? If one thing is to be remembered, what is it? It will be your overall message that you can build the entire presentation around. Imagine that your entire presentation should permeate your entire lecture.
2. Problem
We are very interested to hear about the problem that your research solves. Feel free to make it personal – what problem did you become interested in – why? Think about whether you can build up some dramaturgy in your lecture. Maybe start by starting with an anecdote about why you became interested in this research area in the first place.
3. Solution
Then we want to know what you have done along the road. How did you go about it? But NOT EVERYTHING! Pick out a few individual events, meetings, that made you choose your path. That led you to come up with solutions to the problem.
4. Benefits
Then we want to know. Why is it important? What is the benefit of the research? What does the future look like when your solution to the problem is in the world? What effect has your research had? For whom?
To be honoured as a docent at the Academic Ceremony, you must have been appointed a docent during the period January 1, 2021 to October 31, 2022 and not have been previously honoured as such at Dalarna University.

- If you wish to wear a doctoral hat (doktorshatt), please note that you yourself pay for the hat. The University does not cover the cost of these and need no be ordered no later than October 31, 2022 from www.hattmakarna.se.

December 1: submit a draft text for the Högtidsskriften publication and submit the measurements for your laurel wreath. You will receive your wreath at the ceremony.

The Academic Ceremony: Questions and Answers
Do I have to attend the general rehearsal?
Yes, if you have agreed to be honoured at the Academic Ceremony, then you must attend the general rehearsal scheduled for the evening before the ceremony at Galaxen in Borlänge. This is mandatory for professors, doctors, honorary doctors, adjunct professors, docents, distinguished university teachers, recognised university teachers, award winners, the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the dean (promotor), the pro dean, the ceremonial master, marshals and the chairperson of the student union.
There is no dress code for the general rehearsal: simply "come as you are".
How many guests can accompany me to the post-ceremony banquet?
You (the person being honoured) and one companion have complementary places at the banquet. At a subsidised cost of 500 SEK per person, you can invite two more guests to the banquet.
Can I invite more guests to the ceremony than to the banquet?
Yes, you can, but we would ask that you let us know how many: please email hogtid@du.se.
Can you explain the dress code: “formal attire” (högtidsklädsel / högtidsdräkt)?
This means frack (white tie) with white waistcoat and bow tie, or evening gown. Dark suits are also fine. The following are also acceptable: folk costume (folkdräkt), kilt, military uniform and official clergy attire.
Do guests who plan only to be in the audience for the ceremony need to wear formal attire?
No, they do not. Dark suits are fine. Ladies who are accompanying guests should wear calf-length or full-length dresses/skirts and top. A smart pair of trousers and top work equally well.
How do I book a place on the bus transfer between Falun and Borlänge?
There is a question in the electronic registration about the number of guests that require bus transfer. When you give a number, be sure to include yourself. Bus transfers are from Falun to the ceremony venue, which is Galaxen in Borlänge. You book seats on the bus when you register for the ceremony.

How do I know where to position myself (what order) in the procession?
There will be signs showing where you need to stand and walk. There will be a run-through of this during the general rehearsal.

I have ordered a doctoral hat: what should I do with it during the ceremony?
During the ceremony, place your doctoral hat underneath your chair. After the ceremony ends, put on your hat and wear it in the procession.
When can I wear my doctoral ring?
If you have a doctoral ring, you can wear it immediately after your degree has been conferred. Many of our doctors do not choose to get a doctoral ring. Nevertheless, we include the ceremonial ritual “Receive the Ring” in the ceremony since the ring is a symbol of fidelity to science. The recipient of the virtual ring extends their hand, and the promotor bestows the virtual ring on them.
I have young children and would like to take them to the ceremony and banquet. Does the University have any thoughts about this?
Unfortunately, the Academic Ceremony is not an appropriate event for young children. The youngest recommended age is 15; please note that children receive the same meal as everyone else at the same cost, excluding alcoholic beverages.

Dress Code: Ceremony and Banquet
For professors and doctors being honoured at the ceremony, the dress code is formal: that is to say, academic robes, tailcoat with a white waistcoat, folk costume, evening dress or trouser suit. Guests may also choose to wear folk costume to match the folk costume of their partner or a dress, skirt or dark suit that is fitting for the occasion.

March 23 - Inaugural Lectures
09.00 - 12.00: Professors' inaugural lectures – University Library, Campus Falun.
March 23 - General Rehearsal
17.00: General rehearsal at Galaxen in Borlänge during which attendees will be informed about procedures for the ceremony. Coffee and sandwiches will be served at the start of the rehearsal.
It is important that everyone who is to be honoured at the ceremony attends the rehearsal.
March 24 - Day of the Academic Ceremony
12.00: Lunch for the Vice-Chancellor and new professors at the residence of the Governor of Dalarna County in Falun.
15.30: Photos at Galaxen, Borlänge - new professors, the Vice-Chancellor and honorary doctors only.
16.30: Procession – all who are being honoured should gather in their designated places in the foyer of Galaxen. Other guests must have taken their seats.
17.00: Academic Ceremony.
19.00 (approx.): Welcome drink followed by the banquet. A seating plan is in place for banquet guests.
23.30 (approx.): Bus departs for Falun.
