Referencing as Argument: Supporting Students’ Use of Sources for Stance, Voice and Knowledge-Making

A workshop in which we will explore how referencing practices can help students to participate in academia.

Date: , kl 10:00 - 12:00
Location: Digital only

This workshop does not focus on referencing styles. Instead, we will explore how referencing helps students to participate in academia. How can we help them develop their skills to use sources to support claims, create space for their own argument, and show where they stand in relation to existing research? In this workshop, we will:

  • Explore common challenges students face when using references in academic writing.
  • Distinguish between referencing as formal compliance and referencing as rhetorical action.
  • Analyse how we can help students use sources to support their arguments and show their stance and disciplinary positioning.
  • Design small teaching interventions that help students use references more meaningfully.
