Irene Gilsenan Nordin was born in 1947 in County Meath, Ireland. During the 1970's, she worked as a teacher of English in Africa, before coming to Sweden in 1981. In 1989, she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in English and Computer Science at Dalarna University and has taught here since 1991. In 1999, she defended her thesis at Uppsala University, became Docent at Dalarna University in 2007, and then Professor of English in 2010.

Irene is Head of the Research Group Transcultural Identities. Her most prominent publications are Crediting Marvels in Seamus Heaney's Seeing Things: Reading Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, a Contemporary Irish Poet and The Body and Desire in Contemporary Irish Poetry. Her most recent publication is a collection of essays entitled Transculturality and Literature: Redefinitions of Identity in Contemporary Literature. Irene currently heads DUCIS (Dalarna University Centre for Irish Studies) and is also President of SWESSE (Swedish English Studies Association).
