Women’s Words, Women’s Images: Turning a Hashtag into Feminist Graphic Narratives

#guardianship_is_my_right ( الولاية_حقي #) is one of the most influential
feminist campaigns to emerge in Egypt in recent years. Launched in 2021
to oppose amendments to personal status and family laws, it is both distinctive and innovative.

First, its bottom-up structure places ordinary Egyptian women at the center by inviting them to share personal testimonies online, revealing how current laws shape and constrain their daily lives. Second, in its later phase, the campaign introduced a creative artistic and literary dimension by combining women’s storytelling with visual art through comics drawn by Doaa El-Adl.

As Nesma Elsakaan will demonstrate in her talk, these comics function as episodic feminist graphic narratives, transforming women’s experiences into compelling visual stories supported by concise texts and dialogues.
