New Course Spring 2011

SS1028 Intercultural working methods in preschool and the early years of primary school 7, 5 credits, Undergraduate Level 1

The school and kindergarten is now a multi-cultural arena in which teachers, pupils, parents and children meet. In Sweden we have many children who are bilingual or multilingual. In elementary school and kindergarten is estimated that one in five children / students are bilingual or multilingual. The result is that we are in school and meet children / students with different language, experience, faith and culture.

In order to give teachers and preschool teachers better prepared to meet these children / students, we will at Dalarna University in spring 2011 to start a new course called Intercultural working in preschool and primary education. It is aimed at active or prospective teachers in kindergarten or primary school. The course will be taught in one quarter speed, and are both campus and online.

The overall aim is that students should develop understanding of intercultural approaches in preschool and school years earlier. The student will also develop the ability to incorporate this knowledge in educational practice.

The course highlights the cultural encounters in preschools and schools, and how the teacher can plan their activities with an intercultural perspective. The course covers various theories and current research on children's language development in both first-and second language.
