Getting Started with TANDEM

You’ve found somebody who speaks a language you want to learn. What do you do now? Here are a few ideas to help you get started:

First

Send the person a message. You can do this in Tandem by clicking on “Send Message”.

The message is sent automatically to the person’s email address and Tandem mailbox.

Second

After you hear back from your partner, tell him or her about yourself, what you like to do, what you are studying – and why you would like to have a Tandem partner!

How often do you want to “meet” on Tandem? Do you want to use Connect (Högskolan Dalarna’s virtual meeting place) or do you want to use Skype? Do you prefer emails? Give out only as much information as you feel comfortable with.

Use both your own language in the messages as well as your Tandem partner’s language (as much as you can!). This way, you can practise your skills and also begin a meaningful discussion.

Third

You will know when you are ready to start chatting. It takes time to get to know somebody, especially in a different language. It can also be quite challenging, so keep the first meetings short until you both feel comfortable.

Fourth

Not everything works out in life J. If your Tandem partner does not respond to you, move on and find somebody else that you can work with.

Fifth

Remember to tell your friends and colleagues about Tandem. After all, it’s a free way to practise your language skills as well as to meet people from all sorts of interesting cultural backgrounds.

Good luck!  Have fun! And here’s wishing you many happy Tandem conversations…
