Elastomer metal absorber (EMA) solfångare och värmepump
In order to reduce the costs for active solar collectors, a completely new collector type is created, that consists of elastomer fluid tubes clipped in into appropriately shaped metal form sheet elements for the application as metal roofs or façades. Therefore round shaped clip profiles are integrated into typical metal plates for roofing, which have an absorbing layer for the conversion of the solar radiation. The flexible elastomer tubes for the transport of the solar heat have an optimized high thermal conductivity and also good mechanical properties. This new collector, based on this elastomermetal-absorber (EMA) concept, shows inherent freeze resistance while operated with pure water and opens up new simplified installation techniques. For the freeze resistance of the whole solar circuit, including headers and pipes, the drain-back technique is used as hydraulic concept. This new collector, which is completely building integrated, may be designed as uncovered absorber, delivering low temperature heat, or as glazed solar collector for a heat production of up to 80 °C. It can be used in typical solar thermal applications and additionally a wide range of new applications are possible, as the collector can be easily installed and may be operated with corrosive liquids, e.g. seawater or waste water. The creation of the new EMA façade and roof integrated collector included the development of special components:
- Adaption of the elastomer material with regard to the conductivity, mechanical
strenght and durability. Industrial production of appropriate elastomer tubes.
- Development of metal form sheet elements with appropriate designed clip
profiles regarding the thermal performance and the industrial production.
Construction and assessment of different test modules.
- Simulations of swimming pool, domestic hot water and room heating concepts.
- Construction of test systems and development of installation and hydraulic
details. System experience, identification and elimination of weak points.

A reduction of the annual thermal output if compared to standard solar collectors of 10 % and more have to be regarded for uncovered and covered EMA systems, depending on the heat use concept. Cost comparisons showed a cost reduction potential of more than 30 % by the high degree of building integration using metal roofing elements as absorber, while the original function of the roof and façade elements as building envelope is not affected. For the market penetration, the most attractive practical applications are assumed to be swimming pool systems and preheating of water for the unglazed collector and domestic hot water systems for glazed collectors. The system size may vary from small systems in residential buildings up to large systems of more than 1000 m² for swimming pools, sports halls, hotels, hospitals and industrial buildings.
