One-Year Master Programme in Economics, 60 ECTS-credits

The first semester of the programme contains four courses which lays the foundation for the courses which follow in the second semester. These courses, which consist of mathematical techniques intended for economists, welfare economic analysis of public policy, microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, ensure that the student has sufficient analytical skills for the second semester courses. The second semester consists of an advanced course in econometrics, an advanced course in applied microeconomics and the master thesis which ends the programme. All courses and literature are in English.

Objectives of the Programme

The specific objective of the programme is for the students to acquire tools of economic analysis and apply them to public and private policy making. The students will develop advanced skills, in terms of a solid knowledge in economic theory, in particular microeconomic theory and quantitative methods, for understanding and analysing economic problems. These skills are essential for a practicing economist in many applied fields. After completing the programme, the students will be prepared for staff and management positions that require the integration of microeconomic analysis and advanced quantitative methods in the public or private sector. A solid training in research is emphasised by requiring thesis work. In writing the thesis the student shall demonstrate and practise the ability to integrate the economic theory and methods in a context given by the research question. 

Students who have a Bachelor’s degree with at least a minor in economics

can apply for a pre-master semester at the Dalarna University. This pre-master semester contains a block of undergraduate courses in economics equivalent of 30 ECTS credits and starts only in August each year. Upon successfully completing the courses in this preparatory semester the students will automatically get a seat at the Master’s programme described above. For application to this pre-master semester see:

Recommendation

We recommend all the students who are interested in our One-year master programme to apply for the pre-master course mentioned above for at least two reasons. First, it provides a review of the concepts and second it may lead to an automatic seat in the Master’s programme. Note, however, that this is conditioned upon successfully completing the pre-master semester once accepted.
