Learning outcomes for the course

On passing this course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate fundamental skills in oral discussions, such as turn-taking, communicating clearly and effectively their point of view, and respecting the opinion of other students
  • search for topical information and present it in a concise form, as well as provide ideas from the information for group discussion
  • be aware of the variety of registers (levels of language) within English and how they should be used, that is, to analyse the communication situation and apply the appropriate register
  • demonstrate a practical knowledge of presentation technique in the form of formal and informal presentations
  • show empathy and understanding for cultural diversity in order to prepare themselves to work with business in a culture other than their own
  • write clear, concise and correct business-related texts in English using an expanded business glossary
  • identify and avoid common grammatical mistakes in the English language
  • prepare themselves for a job interview by writing a CV and accompanying documentation and by discussing interview technique.
