Residence Permits and Cost of Living
The Swedish Institute Scholarships
The Swedish Institute offers various scholarships for international students. The number of scholarships varies from year to year, and competition is keen. Most foreign students in Sweden finance their stay without help from scholarships.
Residence Permits and Cost of Living
Am I allowed to work in Sweden?
As a student, you are allowed to work full-time. Since you are staying in Sweden for a limited time, you will not be entitled to the same social benefits as those who live permanently in Sweden. It is therefore important that you find insurance before coming to Sweden that will cover any costs you may incur as a result of, for example, illness.
"Right to Residence" EU/EEA Citizens
EU/EEA citizens who have sufficient funds to support themselves have a right to reside in Sweden. A person who has a right of residence must register with the Migration Board (Migrationsverket) no later than three months after entering the country.
To download an application form: www.migrationsverket.se>> Studies>> EU-EES citizens
To apply online: www.migrationsverket.se>> E-forms
EU students must also show that they have health insurance (the European Health Insurance Card, or similar, issued by their national social security system).
Residence Permits for Study Purposes: Non-EU/EEA Citizens
For information about the requirements for a residence permit, please contact the nearest Swedish embassy or see www.migrationsverket.se.
Extension Requirements
You must be able to show that you have
- performed adequately in your studies.
- received regular financial support while in Sweden. This you can do by producing a bank certificate, statement of accounts, or similar type of document.
- been accepted for further studies and that your financial support remains assured.
You should present your application for an extension about one month before your permit expires.
EU Citizens
EU citizens receive a card with the Right to Residence to their home address in Sweden.
