Students with Disabilities

Students with a disability are those students who have a significant and permanent impairment in physical or mental function for which they need assistance in their education at Dalarna University. Documented difficulties with reading and writing are also included in this definition of disability.

If you have a disability, it is important that you contact Study Counsellor Annette Jönsson (tel. 023-77 84 93) before you begin your studies so that you can receive the best possible service. You are also welcome to visit the university to get your own sense of the study environment here.

Special Assistance

If you need special assistance during your studies, submit a copy of your application directly to Dalarna University along with any documents that verify your need for assistance.

Dalarna University is obliged to ensure that students with disabilities can study under the same conditions as other students according to the UN's Standard Rules on disability(1).

Study Environment

The university must provide students with a good physical and psychosocial environment.

The physical environment must be adpated for students with disabilities so that they can study and work.

Physical accessibility is always a consideration with any renovations and additions to the university's facilities: hearing loops, lifts, door openers, parking places, ramps are such considerations.

It is important that the university's psychosocial study environment is good with a positive attitude towards students with disabilities. No one should be discriminated against because of a disability.

Forms of Assistance

Assistance can consist of help with writing or reading; translation/interpretation; physical assistance; adapted examinations; tutoring and remedial teaching; technical assistance such as help with computers; and adapted chairs, tables, and other equipment.

Adjustments or adaptations can be made to a course or study plan. This can mean that a particular aspect or course is removed or the contents are changed. If a change includes the exclusion of material regarded as essential to the course/programme, then the adjustment and the approval date must be clearly stated on the degree diploma/transcript.

The university's contact person decides which forms of university-financed assistance the student receives. Decisions on the continuation of assistance take into account whether or not the student is performing acceptably in their studies, considering their particular situation. The responsibility for providing assistance extends to all departments.

The following document, in Swedish, outlines the university's obligations toward those with disabilities.

The University's Obligation

In accordance with policy, the university reserves .3% of its education budget for assistance and services to students with disabilities. The chief study counsellor is the contact person for such students.

The university has a special admissions procedure for students who need an individual review of their application for admission for medical or other reasons.

The action plan covers all students with disabilities(2). The university administration, at all levels, is responsible for ensuring that the action plan is followed. All personnel should have a comprehensive understanding of disabilities.
