Physical Geography

In the subject Physical Geography we study the earth, its environment and changes occurring locally, regionally and globally. It is about human beings’ physical environment, dealing with the interplay between ground, vegetation, land and land shapes, atmosphere and oceans and the processes that reshape landscape at the present and over time.

Changes can occur as a result of different chemical and physical processes in time as well as in space. In Physical Geography work is being done to learn which processes that are in control, and also how these processes affect development of landscapes and environment. Climate and its power to affect are important factors regarding this.

Human being affects and is affected by his/her natural surroundings, for example they depend on energy- and natural resources. This creates environmental problems, and Physical Geography studies how mankind affects landscape, its resources and alteration through human influence, and how to resolve acute and long term resource and environmental problems.

Physical Geography at Högskolan Dalarna is mainly oriented towards the relation between human being, environment and climate, historically as well as at the present time. Study areas treat mainly; how natural processes like climate and environment affect human being and her environment historically and up to the present day, as well as how human beings are affected by using the natural surrounding from natural prerequisites. This is studied from a Swedish, Nordic and European, as well as from a global perspective.
