Mathematics Education

Mathematics Education is about mathematics teaching and learning in the classroom. It means to study what mathematics is, how people learn mathematics and why and what teachers can do to make pupils learn mathematics. This means to try to clarify the structure of mathematics, i.e. relations between facts, concepts and procedures. It also means displaying the function or purpose of the knowledge, i.e. the activities that subject knowledge prepares the students for, be it personally fulfilling or socially useful. Finally, development of subject knowledge is treated, historically as well as specifically for the learning individual.
