Japanese

Why study Japanese? Well, that you have to find out for yourself. There are thousands of reasons, and if you have found your way to this page, you probably know some of them already.

Why study Japanese at Dalarna University? Because we offer a modern, high quality education. We teach in small groups on distance and on campus, using a number of online activities. There are no tuition fees.

Courses offered

Preparatory level:

  • Japanese: Preparatory Course I

This is a beginner's course with a relatively slow pace. It is aimed at students who with little or no experience of studying at the university level and who have no previous knowledge of Japanese. It is given part-time during the spring and autumn semesters. This course is not obligatory, but gives a good foundation for studying on level I.

Level I:

  • Japanese I: Oral Proficiency (15 credits)
  • Japanese I: Written Language Proficiency (15 credits)

These courses are beginner's courses, but they have a fairly high tempo. You may take them all at the same time, studying full time, or one by one as part-time study. If you choose to study part time, we recommend that you start with the course in oral proficiency.

Level II:

  • Japanese II: Oral Proficiency (15 credits)
  • Japanese II: Written Language Proficiency (15 credits)

Level III:

  • Japanese III: Language Proficiency (15 credits)
  • Japanese III: Reading Manga (7,5 credits)
  • Japanese III: The Modern Short Story (7,5 credits)

Level IV:

  • Japanese IV: Language Proficiency (15 credits)
  • Japanese IV: Introduction to Linguistics (15 credits)
  • Japanese IV: Haiku and Text Interpretation (15 credits)
  • Japanese IV: Introdution to Translation (15 credits)

Only two of these courses are given each semester.

Level V (beginning in autumn 2011):

  • Japanese V: Thesis
