I am taking the G1 Entry Level English Distance course at Hogskolan Dalarna. At the moment, I am living in Gold Coast, Australia and I must say I see it as a great privilege being able to conduct my studies from the other side of the world. I didn't really know what to expect when I first signed up for distance studies. Now that I am half way through the first term, my impression is very positive. I feel that I am learning just as much as I would if I were studying on campus. I like the set up with online seminars and Forum discussions where I get to interact with other students. I am definitely signing up for the continuation course! |

I have for the past year experienced the joys of distance studies at Högskolan Dalarna. The main reason to choose this type of studies, for me, is the flexibility; as long as you have an Internet access and a computer, you're good to go, doesn't matter if you are in Dalarna or even in Sweden. The wide variety of courses offered is another good reason; I did two courses last term (English Usage and English Language structure) and this term I am doing another three. And I have already applied for four courses next term. Even though everything is done over the Internet, I have not felt disconnected. The Fronter and Marratech are great tools and easy to use. |

Studying at the English Department with Högskolan Dalarna via distance has really worked out well for me. Hearing and seeing classmates who are participating from locations across the globe is both a remarkable and an enriching experience. The courses have a global feel and at the same time are very convenient since you can join in from the comfort of your own home. There are recorded lectures, written assignments and discussions on the Fronter platform and also live interaction via the online seminars. The technology and format definitely take some getting used to, but as long as you have a good Internet connection, you can have a comprehensive academic experience, no matter where in the world you happen to be.

I have been studying English and German by distance at Högskolan Dalarna for about three years now, and all in all, this has been a very positive experience for me. What I appreciate the most is the close resemblance between the campus and the distance courses: we do everything the campus students do, except we do it online. I especially like the seminars online, since it really feels like we are all sitting in the same room, and the atmosphere during the seminars is usually very friendly.
Furthermore, the teachers are great, and when there is a problem they always try their best to work things out. The main reason I study by distance is due to the fact that I have three small children, now aged 5, 3 and 9 months, and campus studies would not have worked out for me. Now, I can listen to the lectures, or post messages on the forum whenever I wish and no one is bothered by the children in the background.
Another advantage is the fact that I can attend seminars even when the children are sick: I made it to a literature seminar when the entire family, including myself, had the flu, which of course would not have been possible when attending a campus course! That is, I'm not missing out as much as I would have doing campus courses. For me, my studies have meant many long nights and hard work, but it has really been worth it. I can truly recommend the distance courses at Högskolan Dalarna to anyone, and especially those with small children.
