Course information
Modern Standard Arabic
At the moment Högskolan Dalarna offers eight courses in Standard Arabic. From a beginners' course where we start off with the alphabet and easy sentences to level eight where we analyse authentic arabic texts. During the courses you will practice conversation, grammar, reading and writing. With a good knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic you will be understood throughout the Arab world, you will be able read books and news and to write Arabic correctly.
From level 4 and upwards special groups are offered for native speakers where all the teaching is done in Arabic.
The Syrian Dialect
Högskolan Dalarna offers courses in the Syrian dialect. Even though most people understand Standard Arabic very few speak it. All the Arab countries have different dialects which they use in their daily life. The Syrian dialect is similar to the dialects of Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine and is understood in the rest of the Arab world too through songs and films. A course in the Syrian dialect is perfect for someone who is primary interest in Arabic is to be able to speak it with friends and colleagues or maybe travel in the Arab world. During the course we are also studying the Syrian culture.
Modern Arabic Literature
In this course you are introduced to the modern arabic litterature from about 1890 and the many radical changes it has undergone. The course is taught in Arabic only.
Love and Sexuality in Arabic Poetry
In this course you will analyse how love nad sexuality has been presented in arabic poetry through the ceturies from pre Islamic poetry up until today. The course is taught in Arabic only.
Media Arabic
As you can guess from the name the course deals with the type of arabic used in media such as newspapers and blog spots. Through listening, reading and translation the students will gain a vocabulary of the most frequesntly used words in arab media and an understanding of the main grammatical features used in this type of arabic. The course requires previous studies of arabic equivalent to 45 HEC
