One-Year Master Programme in European Political Sociology, 60 ECTS-credits

The Master Programme in European Political Sociology deals with various kinds of state-society relationships in Europe since the end of the Second World War. In contrast to many other programs in European studies, more emphasis is being put on individual countries than on the EU, even though the EU and its institutions will be discussed as well. The starting point is the belief that Europe is comprised of a number of countries (including countries that are not members of the EU), which have different economic, political and cultural traditions. To be able to understand the EU one must also be able to understand the difference between countries. Thus, it becomes important to also learn how to use comparative methodologies and compare countries.

The programme is made up of six obligatory courses. Two of the courses allow students to choose from a number of themes; the range of themes may vary each year. The programme is given in English.

Objectives of the Programme

The specific objectives of this education programme are that the students should:

  • Have developed an extensive knowledge of state-society relations in Europe since the end of the Second World War.
  • Be aware of the increasingly transnational character of political sociology and the historical roots of this development.
  • Be able to build normative arguments about issues pertaining to state-society relations and to communicate them in written and oral form.
  • Be familiar with major theoretical and conceptual approaches within the field of political sociology and have demonstrated the ability to criticise them.
  • Have achieved a good understanding of qualitative research methods, especially in the realm of comparative macro-sociological history.
  • Be able to apply the acquired theoretical and methodological knowledge to empirical cases.
  • Be capable of creating an innovative research question and answering it in form of a 10-weeks scientific paper.
