Careers after a degree in English

You may wonder what you can do with a degree in English. A Bachelor’s degree in any subject is evidence that you are an experienced learner. Undergraduate education provides students with a capability of independent and critical judgment, an ability to independently solve problems and an ability to follow the development of knowledge, all within the field covered by the education.  These are highly transferable skills!

With a BA in English, you are used to reading and processing large amounts of text in English. You will have  a broad knowledge about the English language and the literature, culture and society of the English-speaking world including good awareness of the grammar, linguistics, phonetics, phonology, syntax, history and geographical and social variation in the English language and familiarity with the main features of the history of literature and ideas and contemporary society in the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as knowledge of the development of literary criticism and literary theory in English during the latter half of the twentieth century. You will also be experienced in applying your theoretical knowledge in analysis and interpretation of a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction texts as well as other means of cultural expression such as film, television and the Internet. You will be trained in communicating your knowledge to specialists and non-specialists and in working together with others. In fact you will be useful anywhere where advanced English language skills or an expertise in linguistic or literary matters are required

As a graduate in English you will be well qualified to apply for a wide variety of positions in business, government, education, publishing, as well as in the cultural, entertainment, and communications industries. Your training will enable you to develop new skills useful in many career fields. The world is at your feet!
