1. Objectives of the Educational Programme

1.1 Objectives, as Specified in the Higher Education Act (1992:1434), Chapter 1, 9 §:

First level education shall essentially build on the knowledge that students acquire in national or specially designed programmes at upper secondary school or corresponding knowledge. The Government may, however, allow exceptions where education in the field of arts is concerned. First level education shall develop the students’ - ability to make independent and critical assessments, - ability to independently perceive, formulate and solve problems, and - preparedness to deal with change in working life. In the educational field concerned, in addition to knowledge and skills, students shall develop an ability to - seek and evaluate knowledge at a scholarly level, - follow the development of knowledge, and - exchange knowledge with other people, including people without specialist knowledge of the field.

1.2 Degree Objectives, as Specified in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Appendix 2:

Degree of Bachelor (Kandidatexamen)

Scope
A Degree of Bachelor is obtained after the student has completed course requirements of 180 higher education credits with a certain area of specialisation determined by each higher education institution itself, including at least 90 higher education credits with increasingly in-depth studies in the main field of study.

Objectives

Knowledge and understanding
For a Degree of Bachelor students must
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding in their main field of study, including knowledge of the scientific basis of the field, knowledge of applicable methods in the field, in-depth knowledge of some part of the field and a general sense of current research issues.

Skills and abilities
For a Degree of Bachelor students must
- demonstrate an ability to seek, gather and critically interpret information that is relevant to a problem and to critically discuss phenomena, issues and situations; - demonstrate an ability to independently identify, formulate and solve problems and to perform tasks within specified time limits; - demonstrate an ability to present and discuss information, problems and solutions in dialogue with different groups, orally and in writing; and - demonstrate the skills required to work independently in the field that the education concerns.



Judgement and approach
For a Degree of Bachelor students must
- demonstrate an ability to make assessments in their main field of study, taking into account relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects; - demonstrate insight into the role of knowledge in society and into people’s responsibility for how knowledge is used; and - demonstrate an ability to identify their need of further knowledge and to upgrade their capabilities.

Independent project (degree project)
For a Degree of Bachelor students must have completed an independent project (degree project) worth at least 15 higher education credits in their main field of study, within the framework of the course requirements.

Other
For a Degree of Bachelor with a certain area of specialisation more precise requirements are also to apply, as determined by each higher education institution itself within the framework of the requirements in this qualification description.

1.3 Objectives of the Programme

After completed educational programme the student will have:



  • Acquired basic knowledge about tourism, travel and destination management from different disciplinary perspectives

  • Acquired knowledge about the role of tourism in society from an international perspective

  • An understanding of the importance of economic and social causes and driving forces of the localisation of activities and the mobility of people

  • Acquired basic knowledge about firms, business development and entrepreneurship as well as financial control and accounting

  • The ability to apply economic theories on the tourist sector, such as pricing and estimation of economic effects

  • The ability to assess the development potential of a destination

  • Skills in using modern maps and geographical information systems

  • The ability to apply theoretical and methodological knowledge to independently analyse destination development

  • Practical skills to be able to take part in destination development projects

2. Main Structure of the Programme

The content of the programme focus on knowledge about international tourism and destination management from the perspectives of management and planning. The major in the exam given is optional between Tourism Studies, Human Geography and Business Administration.


The autumn semester of the second year is an exchange semester where the student may study abroad at one of our partner universities. As an alternative to this exchange programme optional courses are offered at Dalarna University.

5. Required Entry Qualifications

  • General entrance requirements and Civics A, English B and Mathematics B at Swedish upper secondary school, or equivalent knowledge. No knowledge of Swedish is required

6. Other Information

The name of the programme can be written in the degree certificate. The student must have completed these specific courses within the programme to have this done.
