Background and networks

Högskolan Dalarna has a long record of tourism education and research. The first Tourism programme started in 1978 and since that time the original programme has undergone several remakes in response to a changing market. International contacts and exchange has been a trade mark all along.

In the tourism department the number of programmes has increased from one to three. There are one undergraduate programme and three different one-year-masters programmes. On the graduate level the European Tourism Management Programme is the oldest, which involves 7 other universities in Europe and Bournemouth University issues the degree. Finally a masters degree is now offered in Tourism Destination Development.

The Travel and Tourism Research Association has been a great source for our international collaborations and so has Erasmus and Socrates programmes within the European Union.  In fall 2008 the new International Tourism Management programme was launched with students from all over the world. The entire programme is given in English thus enhancing exchange of students and staff but also to increase the international career opportunities for our students.

We encourage our students to join the university’s alumni network. This network gives our students the opportunity to maintain and expand their personal and professional networks. The alumni network is also important for the university as it allows a maintained contact to former students.

Faculty of Tourism is financially supported by Dalacampus Näringsliv (link to Swedish webpage) during the period 2010-2013. Through this support the faculty is able to communicate their work through this webpage and alumni network and it also supports contacts with the tourism industry through e.g. workshops, student thesis etc.
