Learning Outcomes

The course‘s goal is for the students to develop deeper knowledge of Spanish linguistics, as well as an ability to investigate and analyse linguistic phenomena from different perspectives. Students get a deeper insight into and knowledge of the connection between an individual‘s language use and social factors (for example, ethnicity, age, gender), as well as pragmatics and discourse analysis. Apart from this, students develop their ability to analyse and critically evaluate different theories by writing an essay which covers a linguistic topic based on a well-defined problem area. Students also learn to reflect on, evaluate and critically discuss scientific articles and interpretations of texts, and to convey the content of the articles and their own reflections, both orally and in writing, in a well-argued manner. Students also get deeper insights into some areas within Spanish linguistics, including an orientation into theories and current research issues.

Module

1.
Spanish Linguistics: Sociolinguistics, Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis, 15 ECTS-credits

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate basic knowledge of sociolinguistic research and its goals
  • apply sociolinguistic theories and methods in analysing research problems in Spanish linguistics
  • demonstrate deeper knowledge of central theories in pragmatics and discourse analysis, including a deeper understanding of some key concepts within these disciplines
  • apply theories and methods in pragmatics and discourse analysis in analyses of Spanish language use
  • apply the knowledge and skills gained from the module to a specific linguistic problem.

2.
Academic essay, 15 ECTS-credits

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate the ability to independently search for, collect, evaluate, critically interpret and analyse relevant information based on a problem area
  • complete in a given timeframe an independent linguistic study based on demands for scientific value, links to research, relevant method or theoeretical links, and argumentation which are based on well-carried out linguistic analyses
  • present and argue for your own results both orally and in writing with high demands for language proficiency
  • analyse, evaluate and discuss other students‘ scientific work by pointing out strengths and weaknesses in the form of a constructuve response.

Course Content

The course consists of two sub-courses.

Module

1.
Spanish Linguistics: Sociolinguistics, Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis, 15 ECTS-credits

The module introduces the theoretical basics of sociolinguistic variation in different Spanish-speaking societies. Linguistic attitudes and language variation in multi- and mono-lingual societies related to variables such as ethnicity, gender, age and socioeconomic status are dealt with. In the module we discuss language contact, multi-lingualism and code-switching. Students are also introduced to on-going phenomena such as language death and rebirth related to minority languages in the Spanish-speaking world. The module also gives an overview of the main perspectives taken in account in the analysis of different communicative events. Based on these perspectives, the most important theories in pragmatics, text interpretation and functional and socio-linguistic interaction are integrated. The module also includes exercises in analysing different type of Spanish language use, such as in media, political and net-based discourses. In the practical part of the module, there are assignments on critically evaluating and presenting your own and others‘ interpretaions of texts and analyses. As a result, the module is an introduction to different methods of pragmatic and sociolinguistic investigation which can advantageously be applied in the scientific paper the students write with a direct connection to the Spanish language.

2.
Academic essay, 15 ECTS-credits

The module starts with an overview of the linguistic research process, including choice of subject matter, problem, link to method and theory, literature search, disposition and the writing process. A supervisor is appointed and the topic is selected in consultation with her/him. In the framework of the course, the student writes a scientific study of around 5000-6000 words based on a well-defined linguistic problem with a direct link to the Spanish language. The essay will be defended at an examining seminar. The study should have clear relevance for one area of Spanish linguistics and build on scientific method, and the student‘s knowledge and experience from previous linguistic studies.

Assessment

Module 1 is examined through a number of written and oral independent pieces of work and hand-in assignments, plus continuous assessment of seminar work.

Module 2 is examined through an independent piece of written work of around 5000-6000 words that is defended at a seminar where students are opponents for each other‘s essays. The ability to give and take constructive criticism during the course is weighed in the final grade. The finished essay is also presented at a linguistic seminar.

Presence at the modules‘ net-based seminars is obligatory.

Forms of Study

Teaching is conducted in lecture and seminar form, as well as through forum work where students are expected to participate actively. Teaching also involves individual supervision for essay writing. Teaching is conducted in Spanish.

Grades

To achieve a VG for the whole course, a VG is needed on both modules.
