Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student shall have acquired basic knowledge about international relations as well as having acquired an understanding of the major international political events since 1945. Furthermore, the student shall have understood the major theoretical perspectives of the discipline as well as being able to apply these theories on international events, historical as well as current.

Course Content

Basic overview of:

  • the major theoretical perspectives: realism, liberalism and marxism;
  • the main defining features of the Cold War period between 1945-1989;
  • the different actors of international relations with a special focus on the state and international organizations;
  • the New World Order since 1989;
  • integration versus fragmentation of the international system;
  • international terrorism: the new threat to international peace and security.

Assessment

One take-home examination and active participation of the student during seminars.

The number of examinations is limited to five. The course is included in the course package International Relations I. The course replaces SKA023, SKA037.
