Cost reduction of PV modules by using polymer materials

The project is a joint project between Dalarna University and REC ScanModule AB in Glava. REC ScanModule manufactures solar modules for grid-connected photovoltaic systems. The project aims to reduce the cost of solar modules and photovoltaic systems by replacing glass and metal with polymeric materials. Polymer materials are cheaper and lighter and would also reduce costs for transportation and installation of photovoltaic systems. Polymer materials that are currently on the market have similar optical properties and durabilitly as solar glass. The aim of the project is to develop PV modules using polymeric materials as cover and frame material that meet the requirements of the IEC Standard especially for mechanical loads. A number of PV moduels with polymer cover will be built and tested at SERC and REC ScanModule AB.

Below the measurement results for the transmittance of different polymer material in comparison with solar glass.
