Doktorand/Ph.D. student -- valve-spring wire
Improved coilability (surface oxide) of oil-tempered valve-spring wire
Coilability (surface oxide) is of vital importance for valve-spring wire due to the fact that it has direct impact on productivity as well as quality for the customers of Suzuki Garphyttan. Today, insufficient coilability or poor properties of surface oxide creates customer complaints and disturbances in the final non- destructive testing (Eddy Current Testing).
The primary aim of the project is to perform evaluations and trials that increase the competence within the field ”surface oxide of oil-tempered spring-wire”. There is a strong need to understand how a good surface oxide should be composed, resulting in excellent coilability, and how to create such an oxide.
Another aim of the project it is to find a suitable measuring method for oxide adhesion. The project is of very high priority for Suzuki Garphyttan. It is an important part of a large effort to improve coilability and will be run in parallel with other activities within the company. It should be mentioned that the owner of Suzuki Garphyttan, Suzuki Metal in Japan, also contributes and cooperates in this work with knowledge, support and analysis.
Guidance
Dalarna University will support the graduate student with guidance and know-how within the fields of surfaces, abrasion and evaluation methods. The university will also support the student within the field of materials science.
Suzuki Garphyttan will support the student with skilful engineers who have extensive knowledge about processes and materials (3 postgraduates in R & D). There is also support from R & D Suzuki Metal in Tokyo bringing skills and analysis capabilities into the project.
Start
During the spring 2012, as agreed upon.
Miscellaneous
The employment is for full time and is limited in duration according to “HF 5 kap 7 §”. The research work will be done at Dalarna University in Borlänge and at Suzuki Garphyttan, in Garphyttan.
