Doktorand/Ph.D. student -- metal cutting

Modeling of friction and wear in metal cutting

Graduate student in materials science focusing on modelling of friction and wear mechanisms in connection to cutting of metals.

The department of materials science at Dalarna University are looking for a PhD candidate for a PhD position within the subject of metal cutting.

Wear of metal cutting tools is the result of a tribological contact between tool, work material and chip. Characteristic for this contact is a combination of very high temperatures (up to 1000°C) and contact pressures (in the range of GPa). Detailed knowledge about the friction and wear mechanisms under these circumstances is highly valued by today’s Swedish industry, in order to develop new tool materials and tool geometries, for instance. The aim of the present project is to increase the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms controlling wear during metal cutting, in order to be able to model metal cutting operations with high precision. We are looking for you, who have a strong interest for theoretical, physical modelling as well as experimental work. The latter will include well-controlled cutting- and tribological tests combined with characterisation of the resultant wear using advanced microscopy and surface analyses. The project is done in collaboration between Sandvik Coromant, Sandvik Materials Technology and Dalarna University and is financed by the Graduate school of the Swedish Steel industry.

Sandvik has business sectors within metal cutting, materials science, mining- and process industry. Strategic initiatives within research and development, and co-workers with the ambition to create and improve, have brought Sandvik into a world-leading position within its business areas. As a Ph. D student you are active in maintaining the world-leading position of Sandvik. You will enter a creative and international environment where work is done using innovative and modern manners. The organisation is dynamic and includes a variety of people and ideas. The mix of competent persons, with different background and experience, creates an innovative and exciting working environment where there is great potential to develop.

Pre-requisites

A candidate should have a degree as civil engineer, M. Sci or “magisterexamen” within materials science, material technology, machine technology, chemical technology or theoretical physics.

Evaluation criteria

The selected candidate shall according to ”högskoleförordningen (HF) 5 kap 5 §” have high potential to conduct and complete the research training. The candidate should be strongly motivated for research studies and have good skills of collaboration and communication.

Miscellaneous

The employment is for full time and is limited in duration according to “HF 5 kap 7 §”. The research work will be done at Dalarna University in Borlänge and at Sandvik in Sandviken.

Start

As soon as possible, as agreed upon.
