Challenges of Interactivity and Connectedness

Everything is just a click away. The interactivity and connectedness related to the instant and social use of information technology create communities and social inclusion that both transcend borders and go beyond physical interaction and travel. At the same time, they produce new forms of inequality, disconnectedness and exclusion. Information is not just accessible. It can be produced by everyone, regardless of purpose or interest, and we choose freely what to consume and how to interpret the resulting information.

The constant connectedness and ability to be interactive that have been brought to us by new and developed technology in evermore sophisticated portable devices are challenging the ways in which tourists and producers interact. They furthermore influence the way in which new services are being developed and the way in which existing ones are being challenged within the tourism industry.

Effects on the Tourism Market

The tourism market is becoming evermore consumer-driven as the increasing use of social media has both facilitated the growth of producing and sharing user-generated content as well as influenced consumers' decision-making regarding destinations and service providers. Images of destinations are interactively produced and shared, which means new challenges for destination marketers. The developing sharing economy, such as private letting of accommodation and private transportation, as well as an informal sector of sharing and exchanging services previously organized by commercial actors, challenges established business models as well as norms and regulations. These changes are challenging our understanding of the tourism system as we know it.

Mobility and Virtual Experiences

At the same time as the movement of people is increasing in terms of temporary and more permanent migration across the world, not least to the Nordic countries, both as voluntary and as forced migration, the whole mobility paradigm of long-distance travel for leisure purposes is being questioned for environmental reasons. Technological development and the possibilities that come with digital experiences of augmented and virtual realities, along with gamification of experiences, are further challenging the notions of the tourism experience as being necessarily related to physical transportation and accommodation away from home.

Programme

The Symposium starts on Wednesday the 4th of October with a Welcome Reception in the evening in the city centre, and prior to this, a pre-tour to the World Heritage site of the Falun Great Copper Mountain for those of you who wish.

On Thursday morning we start the academic program with keynote speakers and sessions from 8.30-17.00 at Campus Lugnet, Dalarna University.

The gala dinner will take place Thursday evening at Dalasalen (at the old military regiment) close to Lugnet and Scandic hotel.

On Friday the key-note speakers and sessions will continue until the afternoon and the Symposium will end with a closing session at around 14.30. There will also be opportunities for a post-tour in the surrounding area.

A detailed program will be posted as soon as we have the sessions ready!

Doctoral Seminar in Tourism and Hospitality Research
3-4 October 2017, Falun

Course name: The PhD candidate's tool kit for success: a tourism studies perspective

Level of course: PhD course

Aim and target group:

The course aims to help students manage their research process, overcome challenges and gain a better understanding of their role as tourism researchers.

The main target group is PhD students in tourism studies, business studies, social sciences, and geography, whose research focuses on the context of tourism, leisure or hospitality.

Language: English

Purpose: To provide students with constructive feedback on their individual work. The doctoral seminar aims to help students to manage their research process, overcome challenges and gain a better understanding for their role as tourism researchers.

Course objectives

After completing this course the student is expected to:

-        Understand key aspects of conducting and communicating research within the context of tourism studies.

-        Be able to confidently communicate their research in oral and written forms.

-        Become competent in reviewing and critically evaluating their peers work and be in a position to provide valuable feedback.

-        Develop effective research proposal writing skills, which reflect a critical understanding of theoretical constructs and their application to problem solving.

 

Syllabus:

Students will be examined through a research paper and the participation in the seminar:

1. Each student has to give a presentation on an original research.

2. Each student has to act as an opponent on another student work.

3. The main examination vehicle will be a research paper relating to each student's research.

The research paper is the main examination and will be worth 50% of the grade.

The remaining 50% is divided between the presentation (20%), Opposition (20%) and active class discussion (10%).

Course grades are prodived as Pass or Fail.

Credits and Examination: 3 credits 

Preparations: Submission of an original research paper (or advanced work in progress). Paper length should be between 5000-8000 words (excluding references). In addition, the student should write a short text which describes any challenges the author faces and details the areas he/she wishes the feedback to focus on. Deadline for submission of course papers is September 8th.

Structure: The seminar consists of lectures and parallel sessions.

Parallel Sessions: Students will be divided in small groups based on research themes / disciplines or methodological approach. In the sessions, each student will present his /her own work. The presentation will be followed by a discussion of the work in class. Students will get constructive feedback from experienced tourism researchers and a PhD student (from the group). Each student will determine a topical issue (e.g. a research plan, individual article, theory/method part, introductory essay) for which he/she wishes the feedback to focus on.

Costs: Course participants are responsible for their own travelling and accommodation costs.

Registration: The PhD course fee 3675 SEK covers the PhD seminar, including meals, as well as the participation in the 26th Nordic Symposium of Tourism and Hospitality Research. Registration deadline is the same as the deadline for registration for the conference. Course papers are due Spetember 8th.

The 26th Nordic Symposium of Hospitality and Tourism Research will take place in Falun, Sweden, and will be organised by the Centre for Tourism and Leisure Reseach at Dalarna University. The conference venue is Campus Falun, a short walk from Falun's town centre and close to the sporting and leisure facilities of the Lugnet Arena.

Travel to Falun is easiest by train: from Arlanda Airport, Stockholm, there are direct trains that take approximately two hours. www.sj.se
